Ic10 X-1: the Immediate Progenitor of a Double Black Hole Binary
نویسندگان
چکیده
We follow the evolution of IC10 X-1, the extragalactic binary hosting the most massive known stellar black hole with the mass of at least 23 M⊙. A massive companion of this black hole is a 35 M⊙ helium star that will very soon form another black hole. We demonstrate that this system will become a close double black hole binary with coalescence time of ∼ 2 − 3Gyr. We estimate that a detection rate of such systems is of the order of 0.5 yr for initial LIGO and VIRGO. Additionally, we point out that the existence of a 23 M⊙ black hole in the small metallicity environment of IC10 constrains the mass loss rates from massive stars to ∼ 50% of currently used values. We review the formation scenarios for binary black holes, and show that their co-alescence rate depends very strongly on the outcome of the second mass transfer. However, the observations of IC10 X-1, an binary with a massive black hole accreting from a Wolf-Rayet star proves that this mass transfer can be stable. We analyze the future evolution of IC10 X-1 and show that it is very likely to fo...
متن کاملThe Eclipsing Black Hole X - ray Binary M 33 X - 7 : Understanding the Current Properties
We explore the formation and evolution of the black hole X-ray binary system M33 X-7. In particular, we examine whether accounting for systematic errors in the stellar parameters inherent to single star models, as well as the uncertainty in the distance to M33, can explain the discrepancy between the observed and expected luminosity of the ∼ 70M⊙ companion star. Our analysis assumes no prior in...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملFormation of High Mass X-ray Black Hole Binaries
We discuss the progenitor evolution of high mass black hole binaries with black hole of mass ∼ > 10M⊙, like Cyg X-1. From the observed large space velocity of Cyg X-1, which we interpret as coming from a Blaauw-Boersma kick, we find that the helium envelope of the black hole progenitor must have been at least 16M⊙. Using new and improved wind mass loss rates for Wolf-Rayet stars, we are unable ...

In recent years, an increasing number of proper motions have been measured for Galactic X-ray binaries. When supplemented with accurate determinations of the component masses, orbital period, and donor luminosity and effective temperature, these kinematical constraints harbor a wealth of information on the systems’ past evolution. The constraints on compact object progenitors and kicks derived ...
